saamShida,Saam, D.O. received her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences and completed her residency at the UC Irvine Family Practice program. She is board certified in Family Practice and Geriatrics. 

 Dr. Saam chose to focus on family practice and preventive medicine because she enjoys helping her patients maintain optimum health through both traditional and alternative medicine. She takes a holistic approach to medicine by incorporating integrative therapies, as appropriate to the patient's individual need.

"It is important to develop a trusting relationship with patients and encourage them to participate in the treatment and decision making process," says Dr. Saam. "Forming a partnership with my patients enables us to work together to improve their health and well being."

Dr. Saam is pleased to be a part of the team of family practice physicians at Hoag. "I chose to practice at Hoag because of the excellent reputation of the hospital," says Dr. Saam. "I continue to be impressed by the superb customer service from the staff at Hoag, which makes the patient's experience so much more comfortable and that is very important to me."

Dr. Saam is fluent in English, Spanish and Farsi, and has a private practice located next to the future Hoag Hospital Irvine.

Vitamins & Minerals

Vitamins and minerals are substances your body needs in small, but steady amounts for normal function and health. The body can't make most vitamins, so you must get them from the foods you eat or from dietary supplements.

Vitamin and mineral supplements can be used to reduce the risk of certain diseases. For example, women who take moderate supplements of folic acid prior to and during pregnancy help to decrease the risk of their infant being born with neural tube defects. Folic acid may also help reduce the risk of colon cancer and heart disease. Vitamin C is another important supplement, which plays a role in controlling infections and helps the body make collagen, a tissue needed for healthy bones, teeth, gums and blood vessels.

The established recommended daily allowance (RDA) provides the recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals for proper nutrition. It is important to establish the relationship between supplements, the disease and its symptoms. Vitamin toxicity can happen when a person develops symptoms and side effects from taking high doses of vitamins. Mega doses of vitamin d, A and B6 can be very harmful, or even fatal.

It is important to speak with your physician or pharmacist before taking any supplement, specially if you are currently taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines. Some supplements may interacts with medications and cause potentially serious side effects.
